Antonio Capone
Full Professor of Telecommunications
Antonio Capone is Full Professor of Telecommunications at Politecnico di Milano. He served as Dean of the School of Industrial and Information Engineering from 2019 to 2024. At the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB), he is the Director of the Advanced Network Technologies Laboratory (ANTLab). Since 2011, he has been the Scientific Director of the Internet of Things Observatory, and since 2019, also of the 5G & Beyond Observatory at Politecnico di Milano.
From 2017 to 2022, he was a member of the university’s strategic group POLIMI2040, tasked with outlining potential future development scenarios for the university within the European landscape of technical and scientific institutions.
From April 2021 to July 2022, he served as Technical Advisor to the Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition, Vittorio Colao, and was part of the working group responsible for defining the national broadband development programs (fixed and mobile), contributing technical expertise to the design of the measures and to technical negotiations with the European Commission. Since 2024, he has been a member of the European Commission’s Steering Committee for the definition of connectivity indicators. He is also vice-president and scientific directore of the RESTART Foundation. He has also been in the the Board of Directors of CEFRIEL (2021-2025) and CNIT (2022-2025).
His expertise lies in the field of telecommunication networks, where he has conducted extensive international research activity, as demonstrated by his numerous publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is the National Scientific Coordinator of the RESTART research project funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), focused on the future of telecommunications.
He has carried out, and continues to engage in, intensive applied research and collaborations with industry players both in Italy and abroad, including Vodafone, Nokia Bell Labs, Huawei, NEC, Siemens, A2A, and many others. He was involved in the design and later became Scientific Coordinator for Politecnico di Milano of the 5G trial in the Milan metropolitan area, led by Vodafone. He has participated in numerous national (PRIN, FIRB, Regione Lombardia, among others) and European (FP7, H2020, Horizon Europe) research projects. He is currently coordinating the 5G-CRESCA European Project on 5G private networks.
Since 2019, he has been a Fellow of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
